Is a propane fire pit safe? The answer is definitely yes! This comes amidst the many misconceptions about this type of outdoor fire pit. There are people who are either misinformed or simply lacked the information and believe that propane fire pits are dangerous to use when compared to other heating options like gas or wood fire pits.
While it may be true that these types of fire pits are just as safe if not safer than other heating options, there are instances or situations that can reduce their safety and this is largely due to human errors that happen every now and then.
Here are a few tips on what you should and shouldn’t do when using your propane fire pit to make sure that safety is guaranteed at all times.
1. No smoking near or around your propane fire pit. Never take any chances. While it’s true that propane is less flammable compared to other petroleum products, it is still a wise decision to refrain from smoking when near or around your fire pit.
2. Never use a lighter or matches to check a suspected leak in your propane storage tank.
3. Your propane cylinder tanks should not be stored indoors. However, make sure that they are stored in a proper place outside, away from any flammable materials. They should also not be exposed to extreme temperatures or other harsh outdoor elements.
4. When storing, place them on a stable foundation but never straight on the ground or in any damp location where the cylinder will be prone to rust. Also, make sure that they are stored in a well-ventilated space where there is little traffic.
5. If you suspect a leak or any problems with your outdoor fire pit, seek the help of a professional. Doing the repairs yourself might prove more dangerous especially if you don’t have the necessary experience or knowledge.
6. Unlike your wood fire pit, you don’t need to create your fire from start with your propane fire pit. Therefore, you won’t need the help of any fire starters. It works by simply clicking a switch or turning a valve.
Propane fire pits are safe to use and should make for great outdoor heating options. But like any other device, it is not fool-proof. However, if you always observe the safety precautions at all times, you can be assured that your outdoor experience is safe and enjoyable with the use of this type of outdoor heating option.
